Barend Houtsmuller (1953) was educated at University of Technology in Delft. In 1976 he discovered photography as a means of expression. In 1979, he received a grant from the Prins Bernhardfonds which allowed him to study photography in Venice with masters such as Nathan Lions, Duane Michals and Christian Vogt. In 1980 he was co-founder of Perspektief: a collective, gallery and magazine for photography.

Barend uses photography as a means of visualizing and bringing tolife his world of ideas. In his work, he focuses on an feminine beauty, which he celebrates in an anonymous tribute.

His work is regularly exhibited in the Netherlands and abroad and has a history of over 40 solo and group shows since 1979. His work can be found in the collections of the Rijks prentenkabinet at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, The International Polaroid Collection (USA), the Bibliotheque Nationale Paris (FR) and in the Bert Hartkamp collection. Barend also teaches and lectures about his work.
